Dog Lovin' - Pumpkin Oatmeal Gluten-Free Dog Treat Recipe

big dog little dog, german shepard, jack russell terrier

Our German Shepard, Indigo, is allergic to so many foods that it became almost impossible to find dog treats I could buy for her. She can't have wheat or egg and I needed something in addition to chicken strips as a treat.  So, I decided to play around in the kitchen and created these Pumpkin Oatmeal treats that are gluten-free.  They quickly became a favorite!

I've been wanting to share this recipe on the blog for a while now and kept trying to get a good photo of Indigo & Lily with the treats, but found it an impossible task as they eat them before I can even pick up the camera!  So, here's the recipe with a snuggle pic of them, which I have a million of.

Pumpkin Oatmeal Gluten-Free Dog Treats

Recipe by Laura Ashman Jolna

Prep time: 5 min
Cook time: 12 min
Total time: 17 min
Yield: 22-24 treats

Ingredients
  • 1-1/4 cup oat flour, gluten-free
  • 1/4 cup flaxseed meal
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp xanthan gum
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree, canned
  • 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened
  • 1 Tbsp molasses
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350ยบ.

Mix all dry ingredients together in a medium bowl with a whisk.

Mix all wet ingredients together in a separate bowl with a whisk.  Add wet ingredients to dry and stir well with a spatula until mixed.  Refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes.

Scoop on baking sheet coated with cooking spray using small cookie scoop.  Flatten with a wet fork.

Bake 12 minutes.  Cool on wire rack.  Store in the refrigerator as there aren't any preservatives used.

Note:  I use Bob's Red Mill for the oat flour, flaxseed meal and xanthan gum.  I buy it at my local health food store, but you can also buy them at amazon.com:
This recipe is SO quick and easy to make.  I whip up at least a batch a week and love to give them to my friends with dogs. They are soft and chewy and it's easy to pinch off a piece if you want to use them for training. Keep in mind they have a lot of fiber in them with the pumpkin and flaxseed, so don't give too many at once!

Happy Dog Lovin'!

  2. Dogs love pumpkin and it's good for them too. Thanks for sharing your recipe with us. It's good to buy some of these ingredients in bulk and bake up a batch at once. Sometimes at pet stores you can find the treat makers too, which make it even easier to get a wide range of interesting shapes, for those of us who like to play around with the designs.
