I am so taken by Japanese artist Rie Nakajima's dreamy watercolor illustrations.  Rie's illustrations exude innocence and I love her imagination.  Each one feels like a dreamscape and the children portrayed are delightful.  I feel like a little girl again just looking at them!

Strawberry Shortcake from Gourmet Baking

It's strawberry time again!  My mother's birthday was yesterday and her mother always made her a strawberry pie to celebrate. Happy Birthday Mom!  I prefer cake over pie and will never pass on strawberry shortcake with whipped cream frosting!

My all-time favorite strawberry dessert is Wolfgang Puck's Kaiserschmarren.  It's positively heavenly!  Sharing some wonderful strawberry dessert recipes today ... just click on the photo to see each recipe. Enjoy!

In The Kitchen - Mediterranean Cauliflower Couscous Salad

Mediterranean Cauliflower Couscous Salad recipe from The Kitchn

I'm loving this Mediterranean Cauliflower Couscous Salad recipe from The Kitchn.  I'll be subbing the couscous with tricolor quinoa from Trader Joe's, as I like the color and texture it adds to a dish.  Not to mention the protein.  Adding grilled chicken or shrimp would make this a wonderful main course.  Perfect for Memorial Day!

Buon Appetito!

Artist Spotlight - Children's Book Illustrator Ezra Jack Keats

Ezra Jack Keats - Final illustration for The Snowy Day, 1962
"Crunch, crunch, crunch, his feet sank into the snow."

The Skirball Cultural Center is currently showing an exhibition on the works of Ezra Jack Keats through Sept. 7th. Keats was a groundbreaking children's book illustrator and author and the first to depict an African American as the central character in The Snowy Day, 1962.

I love Keats's use of color and that many of his pieces have a collage feel to them.  The exhibition features more than eighty of his original works. Be sure to visit the exhibition website to view more.  I can't wait to go to Skirball and see these in person!

Dog Lovin' - Pet Cancer Awareness Month

AKC Canine Health Foundation - Pet Cancer Awareness month 2014

May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month and it's a great reminder to check your pet regularly for any early warning signs. Cancer is the #1 cause of death in older animals and affects 1 out of 3 dogs.  All dogs, whether mixed breed or purebred, are at risk for developing cancer.

Here's a list of the early warning signs that are crucial to look for in your pet:

  1. Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
  2. Sores that do not heal
  3. Weight loss
  4. Loss of appetite
  5. Difficulty eating or swallowing
  6. Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
  7. Offensive odors
  8. Loss of stamina or reluctance to exercise
  9. Peristant stiffness or lameness
  10. Difficulty breathing, urinating or defecating

The National Canine Cancer Foundation has a wealth of resources and articles on their website.  It's a wonderful foundation that's worth checking out and supporting!
